WAYS OF COMMUNICATION LUMIO - by Sylvain Mazet

A communication path is a junction between two or more points within a territory. If one wants to study communications channels on a given territory, it should list the landforms that will structure or to a lesser extent influence the network and then lay down in a second step, the various points of this territory should be interconnected.
The third stage of this study will present a refund of the first test communication channels that allowed them to link contemporary archaeological sites and access to different resources in their territories or outside them.

Geographic Presentation of the commune
The territory of the municipality of Lumio covers an area of 19.5 square km, bounded to the north and west by the coastline. The eastern boundary is formed by a ridge that overlooks the whole town and it's finally over Fiume Seccu which forms the southern boundary.

The coast The coast of the town grows from north to west about 17 km long. The coast is mainly rocky, except at the mouths of rivers, they spoof in fact even the granitic pebbles for the most vigorous, which accumulates in form beaches. The main coastal creeks west of the town are provided shelter for boats at gale is particularly Punta Spanu. It should be noted that the moorings by wind from the east are rare in Balagne threefold since, with the Ile Rousse and Revellata. However, winds from the west - southwest - which is dominant throughout the year, only Sant'Ambroggio provides shelter. During these gales west, Punta Spanu is it a danger. To complete this description of the coast, we must mention the presence of an island, that of Spanu, 220 m long and 100 m wide, separated from the Punta, a small inlet of 65 m but also some small islands, such as the one located near the mouth of Fiume Seccu.

Relief
The territory of the town sprawls and the sea level to an altitude of 563 m, which corresponds to the top of the Capu of Occi. The municipal boundary is formed in its upper part, by this natural limit what the ridgeline through Capu Bracaghju (556 m), continuing to the Capu of Occi, thence Capu Luna Piana (345 m). Secondary ridge lines depart star of this line of main peak: steep at first, they end softly near the coast, isolating six coastal valleys. Nevertheless, two major sets emerge: a large part of the municipality is facing the vast alluvial plain of Santa Catalina, whose northern boundary is formed by combining the interfluve Capu Bracaghju, Capu of Occi then down to Monte Ortu (213 m). The rest of the municipality, it occupies a different geographical region, the small coastal valley Sant'Ambroggio.

The hydrographic network is composed of five rivers flowing into the sea first, 1500 m long formed in the trough, down from Bocca di Forcolini and ends shortly after the Sant'Ambroggio beach. The second arises below the saddle between Monte Ortu and A Fuat and emerges on the coast 1.7 km away. The third rises on the slopes of Monte Ortu and empties into the sea at Arinella. The fourth is formed on the east side of Monte Ortu, crosses the foot of Malacucina and not far from the treatment plant and discharge of Lumio and opens into the sea in a small rocky cove well cut. The fifth is the Fiume Seccu which differs from the previous since it does not originate in the territory of the municipality of Lumio but deep in the alluvial plain of Santa Catalina, on the slopes of Monte Grosso (1937 m) . On the town of Lumio, it receives water from streams Falasca, and Patricciola Canapile, before emptying into the sea at the beach of Santa Restitude.

The structural elements of the communication network
-collar
The cervix is the depressed part of a ridge, used to switch watershed to another. On the town of Lumio, there are five major passes. Three of them stand on the main ridge line described above. They can leave the town and move to another geographical region as is the small plain Aregno - Corbara. This is the cervix located at 402 meters, not far from the Notre Dame Stella, among Capu Capu of Occi and Bracaghju. Bocca di Forcolini (261 m) lies between the Capu Capu of Occi and Luna Piana. Finally, I located between the neck and Capu Luna Monti Piana rises to 251 meters. The last two major passes of the town are those on this secondary ridge well marked, since closing at the vast plain north of Santa Catalina: it is, for the first, the cervix lies between the Monte Ortu and A Fuat (177 m) and the second is located between the Village Occi and A Fuat (about 220 m).

Ports
natural ranges may be preferred for berthing areas, depending on weather conditions. There are seven beaches formed from a granitic sand and pebbles, the Sainte Restitude. However, only the main beaches have been able to fulfill this role, if any, it is the one of Sant'Ambroggio, by westerly winds, Puerto Algajo and St. Restitude by easterly winds.

Bridges
We have seen, by its nature and its seasonal nature, the water system is not a barrier to communications at the crossing of their course as could be a very wide river. However, having notched relief, it determines the structure and communication channels. Thus, there is only a bridge to cross the course of the Fiume Seccu, the river's largest municipality.

The current network of communication channels

The Roads National road 197 crosses the territory of the municipality, south-west to north-east. It borrows a bridge to cross the Fiume Seccu then rises in a valley to the village of Lumio. It passes the ridge bounding the plain side of Santa Catalina in the saddle between Monte Ortu and A Fuat to cross the valley coastal Sant'Ambroggio Ribe near it leaves through a special arrangement of the road since it was carved in granite, in the sides of the last hill that marks out the ridgeline. It allows access by a coastal road in the small coastal depression of San Damiano. A Shortly before, a road descends steeply through a series of switchbacks to serve the marine Sant'Ambroggio. Departmental
Route 71 leaves the RN 197 to leave the village of Lumio and borrows for its part, the other collar located at the foot of the hill by A. Fuat. It crosses the valley coastal Sant'Ambroggio dominating the RN 197, and borrows the Bocca di Forcolini which gives direct access to the plain-Corbara Aregno. This road runs along, halfway up the ridge on which stands the Capu of Occi, rising slowly (slope of 1 °) as it connects the two passes culminating at 220 and 261 m and remote 1.8 km.

The railway
Like the RN 197, the track enters the territory of the municipality to the southwest and crosses the Fiume Seccu through a bridge. It then moves away from the road by choosing a path more coastal, along the coast. It thus passes through the municipality does not amount higher than 54 m which corresponds to the small hill where the homes are located in Cocody ("Orsu long" on a topographic map) to Sant'Ambroggio. She joined the line of the highway to exit this coastal valley below as it stands at Ribe. In summary, the Roadway Iron seems to use this route coastal dispersed a maximum of 800 m from shore when the Punta avoids Spanu, to enjoy the low altitude of this area.

The old network paths cadastral
Outside the channels used mostly nowadays, there are still a network path that the common quadrille of Lumio. These are old roads that were used to travel on plots belonging to residents of the town. These paths pass between the properties and are usually framed by two walls. They served throughout the town and the pagliaghji connection to the main hamlets of Lumio and Occi and allow access by various passes to neighboring geographical areas we have already described. This is the case of four paths, in addition to current national and departmental roads borrowers certainly traces of ancient roads. The first form out of the valley coastal Sant'Ambroggio along the coastal road, also used by the railway track. The second pass through the saddle between Capu Luna Monti and Piana and I can connect the many pagliaghji located on this ridge to the plain-Corbara Aregno. The third way borrows the neck located near the Notre Dame Stella and lets go to the village of Lavatoggio. The Fourth Way at the foot of the ridge which lies in the Capu Bracaghju along. It leads to the trough that leads to the Bocca di Salvi (509 m), another pass important communications from the plain of Santa Catalina.
Moreover, one can observe that the Fiume Seccu, while not an insuperable barrier, significantly influence the network. Cadastral roads using secondary ridge lines and align the river, probably to cross through the fords but also to recover the axis that runs along the route and that constitutes a privileged entry into the plain. This network structure also star around the village of Lumio seems "suck" the axes of these paths. Another interesting parameter: it seems that the routes of these paths are borrowing more paths peaks, with some significant elevation changes, one wonders if these paths were not designed specifically for walking with backpacks carrying of man and others were less steep roads more suited to carrying saddled with an animal.

network pre-and protohistoric ?

Archaeological sites Archaeological sites selected are those belonging to the prehistoric and historical periods but also to antiquity. A description of these deposits has been made in the assessment of the archaeological research on the town of Lumio. They reflect the current state of knowledge; sites remaining unknown or have been destroyed by modern buildings. Similarly, the estimate of the occupation of a site based on the study of structures and relics collected on the ground, excavated at best, can only serve to consolidate the sites within broad periods spanning several millennia, but having the merit of making it more convenient analysis and comparison.
is observed first that these sites are held to 42% in the littoral zone (0-40 m) to 47% in the piedmont zone (40 to 240 m) and 11% of the sites occupy a more mountainous (240 to 560 m). To facilitate the return of test lanes, we will retain the Neolithic period of several millennia, the sites of the Neolithic. The Bronze Age and Antiquity are also taken into account in this study.

refund of the first test pathways
... When you look at the map meeting the identified channels and passages that are not limited to, one realizes the density of this network, creating a fine mesh on the territory of the commune. By adding archaeological sites, one can observe that they are mostly served by a road or road used in the past or present. Thus, in order to reconstruct the lines of communication between sites to structural elements of the relief, we can use existing tracks, what we are now, and used as benchmarks to test our refund.
Three sites occupied during the Neolithic final stand on the town and it is U Cugnolu, Muratellu and A Fuat. The first remote shoreline of 250 m and peaking at about ten meters seems closely related to the coast. The second, at 111 m, occupies an intermediate position between U and A Fuat Cugnolu perched himself on a small hill at 239 meters. Three areas of the country are represented, namely, the coastal area offering opportunities for fishing activities and potential maritime trade, the region of Piedmont for the exploitation of land for the relief softer promoting cultivation and finally area peak, commander passes and facilitate visual control of territory. The axis linking three sites still being taken because this is the route of the RN 197.
During the Bronze Age, the two known sites in the territory of the commune, the Porte and Monte Ortu Vecchje occupy positions perched, naturally defensive. If Vecchje Gate, by its position - on a ridge, away from natural lines of communication - seems locked, the site of Monte Ortu, it allows to control the passes and near the plain of Santa Catalina while exercising supervision over the coast. It this privileged position that we should probably discovered during the excavation of one of the terraces of the site, a ceramic decorated with motifs characteristic of culture Apennine Bronze, can attest to maritime contacts with the peninsular Italy. An axis linking the site to the coastline but also passes close to access neighboring geographical areas (coastal valley Sant'Ambroggio, plain-Aregno Corbara) is clearly discernable.

For the ancient period, we notice first, that the sites are near the coast. A Chjalza, islet Spanu and Sant'Ambroggio of coastal sites are in direct relationship with the sea and its trade routes. We have already said, Sant'Ambroggio offer by prevailing westerly winds, shelter and a preferred landing area with its beach, which might justify the implementation of this site.
The site located on the island Spanu could also be related to these sea lanes, may signal the danger in this peak. The other two sites
ancient Porta aa Vechja Prudente and Cala are placed slightly away from the shoreline, the first 400 m cove already described and the second at 800 meters from Porto Algajo, near the small hill that allows it to connect to the naval Sant'Ambroggio.
paths emerge thus enabling it to serve these sites: one between the site of the Punta Sant'Ambroggio Spanu and should be roughly the same as today. Another, leaving Sant'Ambroggio along the coast north through A Chjalza to join the small coastal San Damianu depression. Currently there is a path and travels the same path. Another connects Porto to Algajo Sant'Ambroggio and passes through the site Cala Prudente.

Intelectra Motion Detector

the spur of Monte Ortu - by Claude Michel Weiss

Close to the village of Lumio, the spur of Monte Ortu seems to have caught the attention of Neolithic groups and especially the Bronze Age for essentially defensive. The steepness of its flanks and the establishment of a chamber large or very large boulders seem to demonstrate. The elongated spur, which rises to 213 m, dominates the bay and the hinterland of Calvi. It is a typical element of the landscape Balagne.

The area north of the summit of the spur combines nine terraces located in the middle of granitic rocks of imposing size. These terraces, whose area is quite cramped, seem to form a natural organization able to promote or even cause a settlement. Even if they are at slightly different altitudes, they communicate easily between them, in fact, none of these flats is isolated. While the west side door of an enclosure inhabited area of large boulders (some have a width substantially greater than 2 m), alignment of elements placed on the granite bedrock. The Wall is interrupted several times, with some blocks could slide down the slope.

After a drilling campaign in 1978, excavations on Monte Ortu took place from 1981 to 1993 at a rate of one month per year.

This work has unquestionably brought a lot of valuable new information and helped consolidate a number of ideas generated during other studies or excavations.

First, we must stress the complementarity of the two benches exploited, decks 4 and 8. These places have been visited at the same time (so that the Bronze Age is represented in both sectors interested in key sequences), but it is equally obvious that developments medieval focus on the fifteenth century of our era, concern only the flat top, which is also the case of Bronze Age or the Middle Bronze Age. In terms of the Neolithic, it is more difficult to decide because the basis of filling the terrace 4 has not been completely stripped.

Then, the number of organized soil uncovered soil entirely or almost entirely, is quite important. For a period from the Neolithic to the Middle Ages, we can now reconstruct the evolution of the local habitat and an acceptable offer at least refund graphics. Indeed, among the noteworthy documents uncovered during the various excavations, mention the two cabins of terraces 4 and 8. The home of the Bronze Age of first flat extensive use of natural rock abutments place. A beautiful home appliances, a tiled floor and an entry in the rock are the essential characteristics of this cabin roof a slope. As for the habitat structure of the deck 8, the announcement of modern forms of construction: significant area, two additional documents, gabled roof and mud walls. Moreover, unlike the early Bronze Age, it carefully avoids the strong rock abutments, probably for reasons of runoff. This new design is perhaps one explanation is that the station was influenced Balagne a current emphasis, in this case subapenninique.

If multiple levels reveal indisputable habitats, there are few, on the terrace, 8 which may correspond to sites that specialize in certain activities related to cooking.

One fact deserves a brief comment: the use and regulation of several rock masses of the site, to facilitate the transition between two flats (eg between terraces
6 and 8) or to install a home. It is also one of the characters of ancient or traditional home of Corsica.

Only Late Bronze Age appears to have interested the entire site, at which time there was a village at the Monte Ortu well organized and defended retaining a substantial population. However, it should not be forgotten that the prehistoric occupation also extended at the foot of the high rocky area studied so far.

The site still shows land tenure evolved from the Neolithic and Neolithic terminal, echoing the findings of the nearby site of A Fuat. But also, more surprisingly, the remains of the Neolithic, found primarily in connection with surface collections made in sunken relief, in an area easily accessible. The nature of this site is also quite comparable to other facilities Balagne this phase.

Several stages of evolution of the station have been dated by the method Carbon 14:
-Early Bronze Age (1540 ± 100 RC. for the layer ID of the survey 2 of terrace 4); it
Bronze (900 and 880 ± 60 BC for the layer of the terrace na 8);
-the Middle Ages (1420 ± 80 AD for layer 2 Th survey of the terrace 4).

If we consider that the remains of Neolithic date back to the sixth millennium BC and that they evolved from the Neolithic-terminal part at least the third millennium, we realize that this deposit of Balagne Western, by the number of millennia concerned but also and above all, we have seen, because of the originality and the importance of documentation, is one of the most significant archaeological point of the whole island.

THE VILLAGE OF A NEOLITHIC Fuat - Pierre Neuville

Since 1997, a team of research group Prehistoric Corsica, assisted by volunteers from the village (1) undertook a study of the deposit located on the hill A Fuat, one kilometer north of the agglomeration. Under the direction of the author was able to carry out some interesting discoveries.
Fig. 1: The deposit (from north)

Presentation
The organization of the site covers the summit and western slope of the hill amounting to 239 meters, where almost a hectare could be identified thirteen terraces have hosted small groups of prehistoric. All materials delivered significant and homogeneous surface. Three of them have been positive polls. Ongoing work related to the five (V), further north, with a floor space of more than fifty square meters.
The work done to date have enabled the discovery of many remains, but also two structures (foundation building), juxtaposed unique Balagne, for the period (late Neolithic- 2500-2200 BC?).

The lithic lithic
In documents, 9536 total, there were 56 arrowheads and over one hundred ten instruments and tools ranging from simple scraper heavy equipment grinding (grinding hollow), via scrapers, borers, blades or blades, axes or polished stone vases (Fig. 2).

Legend: 1-4: arrowheads; 5: scraper frontal 6 scraper slot; 7: scraper, 8 and 9: borers; 10: broken blade; 11: fragment of coverslip, 12: nucleus; 13: ear vertical perforations; 14: starting handle; 15: Button ornament , 16: LPs, 17: groove; 18: features grooved; 19: whorl.
Fig. 2: Materials lithic and ceramic

Ceramics
Of the 47,768 fragments of pottery unearthed, 2416 are representative of the characteristic features of the forms (bowls, collars, bandages, etc. ...), gripping means (handles, ears, buttons, etc. ...) or (Decorative fluted beads, buttons, etc. ...) (Fig. 2).

structures
structures represent the major advantage of the search.

Fig. 3 : Les structures

Les premiers enseignements
D’une first study of these documents are permitted to think that we are in the presence of a real village of farmers and breeders. The first activity is evidenced by the material grinding (milling) and obsidian blades have been used to arm the essential sickles to harvest cereals. The second, by spindle whorls used for spinning wool of sheep flocks as well as some remains of bones of animals consumed. Hunting small game animals, even the birds can it be inferred arrowheads miniature (Fig. 2: 3 and 4) No object recalling fishing activities (fishing) were noted, which does not exclude them provided a place as close to the sea
The choice of location and the defensive organization of the deposit from which the remains are still visible attest to a degree already advanced internal structure and hierarchy of the groups who attended.

Ambico Tripod Replacement Parts

REVIEW OF RESEARCH prehistoric and historical ON COMMON LUMIO - by Sylvain Mazet

SITES

Fuat A:
This site has been surveyed and was excavated by P. Neuville. It occupies a hill rising to 239m above sea level, positioned on the ridge line down the Capu of Occi (563m) and defining the broad plain of Santa Catalina. The site is characterized by an organization of his terraced home, circumscribed by a wall made of large blocks juxtaposed. The occupation of this site is attributed to the late Neolithic.

Arinella:
This area was prospected by P. and Y. Neuville. The site where the remains were collected due to the Neolithic, is near a rocky outcrop, on a gentle sloping towards the sea, at an altitude of approximately 10m. No structures related to these remains were found.

Arnaghju:
This site has been surveyed by P. Neuville. It occupies the summit of a hill (111m above sea level) located below the Monte Ortu and organized in terraces. It could be a habitat of Neolithic, according ceramic and lithic material collected.

Cala Prudente:
Prospect by F. Allegrini-Simonetti, this site occupies a flat area of about thirty meters above sea level, located in the small coastal valley leading into the bay Algajo. The remains ceramics collected refer to an occupation of this ancient site, specifically between 200 and 500 AD. AD No structures related to these remains were found.

Chjalza:
Located at the foot of the ridge line down the Capu Luna Piana (345m) between Punta di Sant'Ambroggio and Punta di San Damiano, a another ledge, near the shore at an altitude of 5m was investigated by F. Allegrini-Simonetti; ceramics characteristic of the first century AD. BC has been picked up.

Fussatu:
This site has been surveyed by J. Fratacci then by P. and Y. Neuville. This spur, rising to 235m above sea level, stands below the Capu Luna Piana and overlooks the small bay of Sant'Ambroggio. The ceramic and lithic remains collected on the western slopes could be attributed to the Neolithic.

Islet Spano:
This site has been surveyed by F. Allegrini-Simonetti. On top of this island rises to 14m above sea level, located at the Punta Spano has been observed in a quadrangular structure shaved (5 x 3m). The ceramic material collected around could help to assign the occupation of this site to the ancient period.

Larat:
This site has been surveyed by P. Neuville. Positioned 53m above sea level on a ridge of land down to the bed Fiume Seccu, it is characterized by the presence of lithic and ceramic remains suggesting the Neolithic.

Monte Ortu:
This site has been surveyed by P. Neuville then excavated under the direction of MC Weiss. It occupies a rocky outcrop (213m high), naturally defended by aplombs important but also by a large enclosure blocks blocking the west side. The habitat extending over several terraces atop the hill, is documented, based on work carried out in depth, to the Neolithic and Bronze Age - Bronze Age and specifically the final. Its strategic position on the ridgeline closing the plains of Santa Catalina, near a hill, where a visual check on the coastal plain and has attracted different groups pre-and protohistoric.

Muratella:
Invented by JM Moretti, and studied by S. Goedert and P. Neuville, this site occupies a knoll, positioned at 111m altitude on the ridge line down the side Capu Bracaghju and ending near Fiume Seccu. If no particular structure was observed on the ground, ceramic and lithic material collected can advance a site occupancy during the Neolithic period.

to a Porta Vecchia
This site has been surveyed by F. Allegrini-Simonetti. At an altitude of 25m, near the small stream originating on the flank is the Monte Ortu and passing west of the mound Arnaghju, leaning on a gentle slope towards the sea, many shards of building materials due to antiquity were collected.

Gate Vecchje:
A survey conducted by P. Neuville, on a terrace bordered by large boulders, located on a ledge, below the Capu Bracaghju, at an altitude of 510m, helped to individualize three layers, each characterized by the presence of relics evoking the Age of Bronze, Iron Age and Middle Ages.

Gate Vecchje Corsu:
frames cross-edged, evoking the early Neolithic, found by P. and Y. Neuville, on the flats located on the southern flanks of Capu Bracaghju at an altitude of about 460m.

Ribe Rossu:
Prospect P. and Y. Neuville, the site stands on a ridge overlooking the Fiume Seccu at 65m above sea level. The material collected evokes the Middle Neolithic or Neolithic.

Salducci:
This site was surveyed and excavated by P. Neuville. Two holes were drilled at the top of the hill with soft shapes, culminating in 116m above sea level, positioned on the ridge line down the side Capu Bracaghju and ending near Fiume Seccu. The lithic and ceramic material uncovered evokes the Middle Neolithic.

Sant'Ambroggio:
At an altitude of fifteen feet, the small relief overlooking the beach Sant'Ambroggio sheltered from westerly winds, was to host an ancient site, according to the ceramic material collected.
